Fiestas del Carmen 2016
The Fiestas del Carmen in Puerto del Carmen are among the most eagerly-awaited and well-attended celebrations on the island.
Without a doubt, the most popular events are the processions on sea and on land, the traditional Canarian sancocho meals and the public open-air dances, at which the well-known orchestra La Sabrosa from Tenerife performs.
New this year are Children’s Days, where the attractions all cost €1 for children and €2 for adults. Highlights among the sporting events include the Barranco del Quíquere race, a distance event along the coast of the municipality, which will take place on the 30th July; the fishing competition; the Canarian bowls championship, and the travesia (swimming contest) at Playa Grande, which will take place on the 7th August.
Other unmissable events include the exhibition of traditional costumes ‘Hilar Fino’, which will open on Friday 29th July at 8.30 pm, as well as the audiovisual spectacle “Amar Canarias” (“To Love the Canaries”) which will be projected in the Plaza del Varadero at 9.30pm on Saturday 30th, or the documentary “Voices of the Sea” which will be shown on Tuesday 2nd August at the Fondeadero Centre at 8 pm.
Maritime traditions and customs will be ever-present in the fiestas of La Tiñosa, with the jolatero workshops, the popular rowing races and a meeting of choirs. Foklore is also present at the folk group dance on Friday 5th August at 10 pm, as well as the concerts on Saturday 6th August or Sunday 7th, both at 9pm.
